Bell was drafted using the pick Melbourne gained from their controversial trade with Collingwood for Shane Woewodin. The former AIS Academy player had been named an All-Australian in the 2002 National Under 18 championship while playing for South Australia, and had appeared in one SANFL senior game with Glenelg before being drafted.

He spent the first half of his rookie year in the VFL before a finger injury ended his year. He then played three games in 2004.

The next two seasons were were more productive, with 2005 and 2006 delivering 13 and 12 games respectively, but he was hampered by injury in both years - in 2005 it kept him out of Melbourne's losing Elimination Final side. Having spent enough time recovering from his injuries in the VFL, Bell qualified to play in the Sandringham premiership sides in both those years.

Having played both matches of the '06 finals series, Bell became a regular in the side during the disasterous 2007 campaign. He played 17 games before his year was ended after being collected in a heavy hit by Magpie Ben Johnson in round 20.

2008 saw him play 18 games, a career high, but his performances weren't up to the same level as they had been in 2007 and fell out of favor in 2009 and played just three games before suffering a season ending shoulder injury in the Demons round 15 victory over Port Adelaide.

Despite suggestions that Carlton were interested in securing his services during 2009 trade week, Bell stayed with Melbourne. He suffered another serious shoulder injury in a 2010 pre-season practice match against Adelaide, and after returning to Casey in the VFL midway through the year failed to play a game for the season before it was announced on August 23 that he would not be offered a contract extension.

In March 2011 Bell revealed that he was seeking compensation from the Demons for brain damage suffered from repetitive concussions suffered during his footy career.
