Born in England, Royle debuted as a defender aged 19-year-old in 1898 and played three matches. He played in three consecutive wins at the start of the season.

In 1915 he enlisted in the 7th Battalion of the AIF. After serving at Gallipoli, Egypt and in France he was killed by an enemy shell.
