A well regarded Western Australian, Kingsbury was signed by the Demons in August 1941 when he was transferred to Victoria to attend army officers' training school. He was also met by officials from Carlton, Essendon and St Kilda but chose to join Melbourne because his ex-Kalgoorlie teammate Stan Heal was already there.

He was expected to go straight into the side but failed to win a clearance. He missed the last game of the home and away season and the ANFC ruled that interstate player transfers had to take place before the finals started.
