August 1885 match vs Carlton

Saturday 29 August - Friendly Society Ground

Melbourne 2.7
Carlton 5.8 (half time 0.3 to 2.6)

Carlton win by 3 goals

Goalkickers: C. Coulson 1, Hubbard 1

Melbourne's second match at their new ground was ruined as a spectacle by heavy rain falling early in the match. Carlton further wrecked Melbourne's day by running away with an easy win - their third of the season over the Reds.

Spooner captained Melbourne again in the absence of George Aitken, and he won the toss which allowed him to force Carlton to kick into a strong breeze in the fifrst half. It didn't help them, with the visitors scoring first goal and behind of the game before the rain started.

C. Coulson could have scored a major for Melbourne but hit the post, and Melbourne managed just three behinds for the first half. The Reds were better in the early stages of the second half and attacked early but conceded the fourth goal of the game.

Coulson made up for his behind earlier by kicking the first goal of the game for his side, and both teams added one more before the end of the game.

Best were Carroll, Griffith and Brayshay.
