After suffering two surprise defeats in a row, the selectors blooded two new players for the game against the second placed Lions. For the third week in a row Melbourne dominated the first quarter, holding their opposition scoreless for the third consecutive game. This time they continued after quarter time and were never caught again.
Needing a win to stay in the race for the Grand Final, the Demons had to endure a tense last 90 seconds when the margin was cut to six points and the ball was inside Brisbane's forward line. They narrowly held on to win and keep their season alive.
Best were Pearce, O'Dea and Patterson. Cunningham suffered a cut nose from a head knock.
