Despite including seven first-games, four rookies amongst them, the Demons did enough in the hot Darwin conditions to engineer a last quarter comeback and qualify for the second round of the competition.
Melbourne built up a 17 point lead at half time, but after the Bulldogs cut the margin to five points at the last change, the Demons held on to win by a point.
