Suffering a pre-season full of financial woe, the Demons were keen to keep their Wizard Cup run going as long as possible.
Coming up against West Coast they started as underdogs, even with the Eagles on the road. A week before Collingwood had suffered a loss of more than a hundred points at the hands of the ruthless Eagles, but the Demons were made of stronger stuff.
Russell Robertson booted an unofficial goal of the year contender in the first quarter, but the biggest impact was felt by Eagle rookie Clancy Rudeforth who was collected with a big bump by David Neitz.
Melbourne had a 22 point lead at the main break, and had extended it to 40 in the third term before the Eagles rallied. It was some of the Demons lesser lights who steadied the ship. Simon Godfrey, who had tagged Ben Cousins handily was also damaging going the other way while Chris Heffernan was lively in the midfield. Bruce and Neitz were almost amongst the best.
