The first ever night battle between the two sides saw the wooden spooners progress into the second round of the tournament.
It was the Saints woeful accuracy which cost them victory despite a withering last quarter comeback. They turned for home with just three goals from 19 set shots and a 31 point deficit, and despite adding five goals in the final term the gap was too great.
Melbourne's victory came despite Dillon and Parke being well held in the forward line and the Saints rucks dominating.
St Kilda was pressing near the end of the game when John Townsend put the result beyond doubt with a strong mark and his third goal.
Best were Townsend, McKenzie and Biffen.
