In a State of Origin week friendly match, organised as part of the clearance of George Lakes to the Demons from the Broken Hill league, Melbourne were missing six players, including captain Hassa Mann, but were still too good for the combined Broken Hill representative side.
The Demons kicked seven straight behinds before opening their account late in the first quarter. With a three goal wind Broken Hill only narrowly managed to outscore the Demons in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
It was the first visit by a VFL side to Broken Hill in 14 years.
