On their earlier visit to Corio Oval in 1882 the then winless Melbourne had shocked eventual premiers Geelong, but there was to be no repeat of their heroics and they were thrashed handsomely.

Missing six of their best 20 players, and having to replace them with members of the second 20 much of the interest was as to how badly the home side could mangle their guests. Few outside of the players and club support staff themselves made the trip down on the special Melbourne train, and their pessimism would turn out to be correct.

The match almost didn't happen, with Melbourne's suggested umpire Mr Hutton from South Melbourne objected to by the locals on the grounds that they had already asked the regular Corio Oval umpire to take charge of the match. They refused to play under Mr Hutton, and eventually Melbourne acceded to their demands and began the match.

Despite the heavy score McKenzie was one of Melbourne's best for his dogged attempts at keeping Geelong out, but he received little assistance from his teammates who kept trying to run with the ball despite the huge gulf in class between the sides.

Best were McKenzie, Longden and Longden.
