Fremantle had won nine games in a row before their first week finals defeat at the hands of Adelaide. Tellingly seven of those victories had been at home, and nwo they faced a Demon side without Mark Jamar or Matthew Whelan - injured during the Elimination Final victory over St Kilda.
Nick Smith was selected for his first match in three years as a replacement for Jamar, but his return was anything but a fairytale and he was delisted at the end of the season. The Demons got the first two goals but Freo struck back to lead narrowly at quarter time. The Demons were once again the better side early in the second and opened up a 16 point lead early on before surrendering it and going into the long break a goal behind.
17 points behind at the final change the Demons were inspired by Brad Miller, easily their best player, and cut the margin to ten. He missed a kick from 50m just seconds later and Fremantle held on to win.
Former, and future, Demon Chris Connolly had coached the Dockers to their first finals win in 11 seasons of AFL football.
Melbourne's best were Miller, Brown and McLean.
