Despite having been given an unexpected week off by virtue of the West Coast/Collingwood draw, the Demons entered the match against the Eagles with troubles. Garry Lyon missed the match after being collected heavily by Steve O'Dwyer in a Thursday night training mishap.

West Coast made six changes, including dropping captain Steve Malaxos, and were expected to run out of gas in their third straight match on the wide expanses of Waverley Park. Despite Melbourne's selection issues they had still been sent out as 5/1 on favourites off the back of the extra week, against an Eagles side who had not yet won a finals match.

The Demons tried to unsettle the opposition with rough tactics before the opening bounce, but they were soon silenced by Chris Mainwaring kicking the Eagles' first two goals within 90 seconds. Their ruckmen dominated the centre, and fourth game full-back Lockyer blanketed the dangerous Darren Bennett. Even when Melbourne had their chances they failed to take them, kicking seven straight behinds in the second term.

West Coast were as much as 66 points in front in the third quarter. The Demons gave a belated rally but it wasn't enough, and West Coast became the first interstate team ever to win a final. John Northey lamented his side not being switched on, and described their two goal first half as "really pathetic".

Best were Brett Lovett, Spalding and Campbell.
