Footscray's in-form ruck division of Gary Dempsey and Garry Baker were expected to be a handful for the out-of form Carl Ditterich. Graham Molloy was a late withdraw, replaced with Wayne Delmenico.
Fourth gamer Glenn Swan started at full-forward but was matched up against Laurie Sandilands, who had held Doug Wade to three goals the week before. He was held goalless despite Sandilands leaving the field with injury but midfielder Stan Alves stood up with a match winning performance.
The Dogs failed to score in the first term, but Melbourne were kicking with the traditionally strong Western Oval breeze and only managed 2.6. They successfully managed to defend their lead in the second term and went into half-time a point in front.
Determined not to waste the wind a second time Melbourne kicked five goals in a row to open the third quarter, including three to Alves, but the Dogs stayed in touch and despite being five goals down at the last change they stormed home to make a game of it.
In the tense final moments with the scores level a mark and goal from Peter Dilnot, which would turn out to be his last kick in league football, put the Demons in front and they held on to win.
Best were Ditterich, Wells and Alves. Wayne Delmenico and first gamer Ian McGuinness were unused reserves. Clark suffered a corked thigh. Graham Molloy was a late withdrawal from the side due to a leg injury.
