For the fourth time that season the Demons kicked no more than four goals in a match and the result saw them drop to 1-8, above just the winless Fitzroy on the league ladder. North weren't much better with just 2.5 wins for the year and for the first half they barely looked better than the struggling visitors.
North kicked with the wind in the first quarter and were restricted to two goals and an eight point lead, and the Demons restricted them to a goal when they kicked into it during the second quarter but Melbourne wasted their turn by booting 0.8 for the term.
In a poor standard game it was North who finally broke free in the third when they booted 6.5 to nothing to all but put the result beyond doubt. Four of the goals came in a four minute burst, while they struggled for the rest of the afternoon to score their other five.
On one solitary goal at the last break the Demons managed to close the margin by three goals in the final term but fell well short of the blockbusting comeback needed to unseat the Kangaroos.
Best were Williams, Johnson and Alves. Emselle (concussion) replaced by Rowe at three quarter time and Hamilton (leg injury) replaced by Vearing in the last quarter.
