The big improvers of season 1925 went to Geelong and were given a reality check in a first quarter where they were blown out of the water by their fellow top four aspirants. Corio Oval was enjoying it's largest ever crowd and gate receipt, thanks in part to many visitors from Melbourne, and the locals saw something special.

With the score 40-1 at quarter time - and they had scored first - Melbourne were valiant for the rest of the day but had left themselves far too much work to do and crashed to defeat. They kicked two goals early in the second quarter and won it with a slight breeze advantage but the game was already over.

The game continued to be fast and full of good play, but the third quarter see Geelong pull away again. Melbourne began well but had four behinds in a row - any of which could have been goals - before registering the opening two goals through Moyes. Geelong ran away with the quarter from there, restoring a lead of 40 points going into the last quarter.

With the heat out of the game in the final term Melbourne kicked four goals, three of which came from Moyes, but Geelong added two of their own to make sure the visitors didn't get too close for comfort.

Warne-Smith, Chadwick and Davidson were Melbourne's best as they dropped back to the pack with their first loss since Round 2.
