A trip bayside brought Melbourne's second straight narrow loss and saw them lose touch with the top four.
The visitors seemed more capable individually but their attempts at taking the four points home were thwarted by a team who had been teamwork - and could kick straight at goal.
For all of Melbourne's dominance in the air they kicked themselves out of the contest. By crowding the play and slowing the home side down they got within three points in the last quarter before the Pivotonians steadied and extended the margin back to two goals.
Allen, Haines, Coy, Flanagan and Lilley were best.
