With their hopes of playing finals hanging on by a thread, the Reds bounced back into form with the highest score in the league that Saturday, and their largest since Round 7, 1909. The injury ravaged visitors sent a team in with numerous changes due to injury, including two first gamers, and only had 14 fully fit players. Melbourne also had a number of players out injured but covered them with adequate substitutes.

The unreliable home side were helped by Richmond suffering two more injuries during the match, but they were still clearly the better side after the first 10 minutes. Once the game had settled, and Richmond had failed to take account of the breeze, Melbourne were the better side all day. Their lead could have been even larger at quarter time if they'd not missed easy chances.

After the break Melbourne took complete control of the game save for a few sparing rushes by the Tigers. The visitors had a good patch on the other side of half time but could only add one goal for the quarter and saw their lead further whittled away.

Best were Fitzpatrick, McKenzie and George.
