Two wins in a row early in the season had levelled Melbourne at 2-2 and given them a platform to base a finals campaign on, but a fourth straight loss almost ended any hopes they had of making the top four as the mid-point of the season approached.

A medium sized crowd turned up, with speculation that fans could not 'depend upon Melbourne for a really good game- they are either up like a rocket or down like a stick". It didn't help that on this day they were missing prominent players like Rigby, Monk, Dolan, Onyons and Wright.

The home side had the wind in the first quarter and used it well to their advantage, kicking four goals to nil but Melbourne's fortunes brightened when they had their opportunity to use the breeze. Despite this they couldn't draw level and Collingwood kicked away again in the third, regarded as the best quarter of the game.

Both sides slackened off in the last quarter and it was an even final term. Collingwood won it by a point and took the four points comfortably.

Best were Pearce, Bacquie and Harris.
