A strong wind blew to one end of the ground, helping the locals open up a 32 point lead at quarter time. Melbourne only chipped away at the gap in the second but held St Kilda relatively well in the third before launching a blistering comeback during the fourth term. While St Kilda failed to score again they managed to hold on to win by three points.
