After an easy win ((Round 6 1957|the previous Saturday) the Demons had returned to the top of an even ladder after their rough start to the season. They should have stablised their position against the second last Tigers but suffered a surprise defeat based almost solely on one poor quarter.

With the scores level at both quarter and half time, the Demons then kicked 0.8 in the third to leave them a goal down at the last quarter. Ian Ridley kicked four of the behinds before Richmond finally sparked and kicked two goals. It delivered on the plan set by Tiger coach Alan McDonald, who'd set out to blanket Tunbridge, Fenton-Smith and Lord.

They won the final term by four points but couldn't take the lead. It continued their poor streak in away games during the year, and their forward work was still well below the standard expected of a premiership side. Throughout the game they had shown little cohesion, with teammates fighting each other for the ball and not kick to advantage.

The Demon forward line fell down badly, and if it wasn't for a brave ruck performance by Terry Gleeson and the strong defense they'd have been beaten by even more.

It was the lowest score any side had kicked against Richmond since 1948.

Best were Marquis, Beckwith and Case. Bob Johnson was a late withdrawal with the flu, replaced by Cook. Kerr was replaced by Pinfold (cramp) in the last quarter, then Pinfold was himself replaced by Carroll.
