After five wins in a row to start the season, the Demons suffered a surprise defeat against the Swans. Sydney hadn't won since Round 1 and were missing both Greg Williams and Gerard Healy. When Tony Campbell kicked the first two goals for Melbourne it looked like another tough day at the office, and the quarter time lead was 23 points. The Swans kicked two quick goals to open the second, and were in front by the break.

Melbourne jumped the Swans again after half time, and two goals in a minute from Simon Eishold put the Dees further ahead before Sydney struck back. They went into the last quarter two points behind but grabbed the lead within the first minute.

but after a tight first quarter edged away and despite falling narrowly behind at the last change came back to win. The Swans had the aid of the breeze in the last quarter and used it kick five goals to four and win. A last ditch effort by Steven O'Dwyer was foiled by a desperate spoil and the home side held on to inflict Melbourne's first defeat of the year.

Best were Stretch, Yeats, and Spalding. Brian Wilson hurt his shoulder and Sean Wight suffered a season-ending knee injury in the reserves.
