Coming off the bye, Melbourne's flawless start to the season continued as they withstood a last quarter challenge to defeat the reigning premiers - and condemn Essendon to their third straight loss early in the season.
In a week where Collingwood President Allan McAlister had suggested Melbourne should merge with North Melbourne and Richmond the Demons showed that any lingering issue off-field were not affecting them. They gave up a three point lead at quarter time then led at every change.
Essendon closed to within five points in the last quarter after kicking two goals in a row, but missed two more chances only for Allen Jakovich to kick a steadier at the other end.
Best were M. Febey, S. Febey and B. Lovett. Sean Wight also kept Paul Salmon to five touches. Garry Lyon was concussed.
