Against the side who had knocked them out of the 1925 finals race, Melbourne went to Victoria Park hoping for a rare victory at the ground and got themselves off to a good start with six goals in the opening term. From there they were lucky to double their score over the next three quarters.

Collingwood got their second goal early in the second quarter as Melbourne started to run out of juice. The visitors missed several chances through undue haste and back kicking, but still managed to take the lead into half time thanks to Ivor Warne-Smith saving them twice in defence.

The Pies took the lead in the third quarter with four goals in four minutes, with one of the four gifted to them by a failed short pass from Tymms, and the complexion of the game changed entirely. Late in the quarter Melbourne increased their vigour and got back within three points with three late goals.

Melbourne hit the front early in the last quarter through Davie but the Pies had something in reserve, and in a see-sawing last quarter they came out on top. They took the lead back almost immediately, before Melbourne went ahead again. With two points the difference Collingwood went back in front and held the lead. The Fuschias got back within five points late in the game and were attacking when the bell rang but couldn't get back in front.

Warne-Smith, Johnson and Taylor were best.
