Melbourne got their season back on track after a disappointing loss in Geelong a week earlier, but it wasn't without some drama.

Fitzroy's first quarter stunned the MCG crowd as they booted the first five goals of the game. It took them some time to get going, missing a number of chances early before taking control on the scoreboard. Melbourne's only goal came after 20 minutes through Wittman, and they were left with a 29 point deficit to overcome after quarter time.

A goal early in the second quarter to Wittman after he dodged two opponents changed the complexion of the game, and when Vine kicked his side's third they were back in it. From there Fitzroy started to look tired while Melbourne took over. The margin was cut to two points when the Roys steadied from a free kick, but they were overtaken by half time by two more Melbourne goals.

The game had swung in both directions during the first half, and from the start of the third quarter until the last ten minutes of the game the two sides struggled for supremacy. Three goals each in the third quarter saw Melbourne extended their margin by a point as the game started to become overly physical.

The game remained tight until the last few minutes when Melbourne ran away to a comfortable victory.

Best were Murray, Usher and Abernethy.
