After getting their first win of the season against the hapless University the Reds once again ran into one of the league's top teams and were once again found wanting to the tune of five goals.
A "fair sized" crowd saw an uninspiring game, and despite Carlton producing the largest score of any league club that Saturday afternoon it was nothing to write home about. Melbourne were disappointing but at least won credit for playing the match out until the end.
Best were George, Hendrie and Tomkins.
Shortly before the end of the match Carlton's Challis was felled, and at the bell fans charged the ground in what newspapers called a "football riot". More than 300 people fought on the ground and Melbourne's players being pelted with objects as they entered the dressing room. Jack Bristow was charged with police for striking Challis after the game, and later fined 5p. Despite not being charged or suspended by the league he joined Richmond midway through the year but never played league football again.
