On one of the only grounds in the league not badly affected by weather, Melbourne won in a fast and open game. Persistent rain had lifted around midday, and by 3pm conditions allowed for a reasonable standard of play.
Collingwood had first use of the wind, but only put up a four point lead which soon evaporated in the second as Melbourne booted three goals to a single point. When they had second chance to use the breeze Collingwood did much better and reduced the margin to four points at the last change.
The margin was still three points late in the game before Geddes, a replacement for Wardill who had an ankle injury, kicked a goal and restored the margin to 10.
Best were Mitchell, Herring and Steele.
