With nothing left for the Demons to play for, and Fremantle all but having been played out of a home final due to North Melbourne's narrow victory over GWS early in the day the Dockers free to win comfortably.
If there was any question of the margin staying within the thin range that Fremantle required to play West Coast at Subiaco the next week it was ruled out when Melbourne gifted them two goals in the first two minutes - at which point just one Demon had a possession to his name.
Melbourne dominated the opening of the second quarter but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard with their makeshift forward line and when Fremantle recovered and took control again they went on to win comfortably.
Best were Grimes, Nicholson and Sylvia.
Josh Tynan replaced Sam Blease in the third quarter.
