Playing to consolidate their position in the top four, Melbourne set up their win with a five goal to one third quarter.
Five minutes into the final quarter, the game was halted due to local lightning strikes. It resumed 34 minutes later, after which the Eagles kicked a rush of goals, reducing the margin to nine points with two minutes to play. Melbourne held on to win.
