Geelong's finals hopes rested on winning both remaining games and South Melbourne losing theirs. With Melbourne expected to be dispatched easily all ears were on the reports from the Lake Oval where South were taking on Fitzroy.

The Cats did their bit, though they made hard work of it, but it was all for nothing when news came from that South had won and sealed their place in the four. Even with the benefit of a lopsided 56-26 free kick count the Cats had to withstand a barrage from the Demons in the last quarter to win, and had Melbourne kicked more accurately than 4.6 in the final term they'd have gotten even closer.

The margin was just six points well into time-on when the Cats won three of their 56 free kicks in quick succession and took the ball from one end of the field to the other for Ian Nankervis to kick the sealer. It was all for nothing as South won.

Best were Parke, Bugmann and Molloy. Colcott and Walker were unused reserves.

Despite it being Melbourne's tenth loss against the Cats in a row it was their highest score at Kardinia Park since 1961.
