As the merger controversy continued the Demons responded with their second straight victory. Despite seemingly having the game in their keeping several times the Demons let Fremantle back into the game, and when the Dockers kicked the first goal of the last quarter to draw within seven points a comeback loomed.

Melbourne took the hint and steadied, peppering the Fremantle defence for ten minutes before breaking through with a Jeff Farmer goal. Anthony Ingerson marked and goalled to seal the result just a minute later.

Dockers coach Gerard Neesham blamed his side's poor start on only arriving in Melbourne on Thursday for the Friday night game.

Best were Ingerson, Tingay and G. Lovett. Ingerson was reported for striking and suspended for two matches.
