On the day when the 1939 Premiership pennant was unveiled Melbourne clashed with another one of the previous year's finalists who had suffered a loss in the first round of the season.

Leading at every change a typically strong performance by the forwards got Melbourne over the line. Down the other end, Richmond continually troubled their defenders. The scoring was high considering that the ball was slippery and difficult to handle. Two of Melbourne's four goals in the first quarter came off the ground after easy marks were dropped on the goal line.

Richmond got the first goal of the second quarter, and after Murnane repelled two attacks in a row Melbourne counter-attacked to goal through Rodda. The standard of the game improved as the players started to come to terms with the slippery conditions, and at half time Melbourne held a 17 point lead.

Murnane, Beames, Rodda and Roberts were best. Roberts had to leave the game with an injury, replaced by Barassi.
