With the use of a strong breeze in the first quarter the visitors should have gotten off to a fast start, but they were well outplayed by the Blues and only managed a one point lead. When the home side had their chance they failed to take advantage as well, and the game went into half time with just four points separating the sides.
Melbourne finally took advantage of the breeze in the third term, kicking five goals to one but Carlton too had mastered the wind and restricted their opponents to two points in the last quarter while kicking 5.7 to run over the top of a depleted side with five minutes to go and win. Melbourne were without Chadwick, Wittman, Deane, Dunbar and Collins and had also lost Coy for the last quarter. Warne-Smith was also injured during the match.
Harry Davie fell ten goals short of his club record goalkicking feats of the club's last meeting.
Warne-Smith was best, Taylor and Coy (until he was injured) were also strong performers.
