After opening their season with a comfortable victory against St Kilda the Redlegs came up against a far strener test in Collingwood at Victoria Park but were not disgraced. If their forwards hadn't failed so badly the visitors might have been in the game in the last few minutes.
Despite much of the game featuring crowding around the ball it was still played at a quick pace. Melbourne desperately missed their captain Bert Chadwick who had been kept out of the game due to an attack of influenza, and his steadying influence in the backline might have been the difference between victory and defeat.
Collingwood were the far superior team, and barely had a player who put a foot wrong but it was their defence who continually shut the visitors out and held them to three goals at the last change. Melbourne's cause wasn't helped by poor kicking for goal throughout the day, but their dash and accurate passing kept the home team on their toes for most of the day.
The Reds were goalless in the first term, with Collingwood the far superior side in the wet conditions. The visitors got two goals in the second but finished the half 17 points behind. Neither side attacked well in the third, with the Pies kicking the only goal before three quarter time.
Wittman's fourth cut the margin to 12, before Taylor restored that gap late in the quarter. With the margin 11 points late in the game, Stan Wittman marked in front of goal but tried to run around the man on the mark and lost the ball instead of cutting the margin to five points and the game was lost.
Best were Taylor, Mollison and Coy.
