For the second straight year a lowly Demons side, this time having won two games all year, swung a major surprise by beating Carlton.
Both sides scored freely in the first half, with 10 goals each at half time before Melbourne shot away in the third term with a six goal to three quarter to take a 21 point lead into the last break. The Blues narrowly won the fourth quarter but couldn't do enough to bridge the gap and challenge.
