Biggest loss in Round 15

Having snapped a run of nine losses in ten games the week before by thrashing crisis club Fitzroy, the Demons were trying to salvage something against the struggling Bombers. Essendon were still fighting for a spot in the five and were starting to be talked about as a spent force in the VFL.

Kevin Sheedy and his team responded by kicking the 10th highest score ever against the Demons in VFL/AFL history. With Simon Madden destroying all comers in the ruck Sheedy was able to leave Paul Salmon at full-forward and "The Fish" rewarded him with an eight goal performance.

The first ten minutes of the match were even with both side kicking two goals but from there it was a pure massacre. Melbourne got six more for the day, Essendon 25 more. John Fidge kicked both the first two goals but suffered a knee injury which would end his season and career with the club.

Best were Yeats, Campbell and Healy. Graeme Yeats was reported for striking and suspended for two weeks.
