Melbourne suffered their second straight narrow loss in a row to suddenly put their hopes of playing in the finals on a knife-edge. After kicking a record score against South Melbourne they had been narrowly beaten by bottom of the table Fitzroy and in losing again dropped out of the four.
In the first quarter the wind blew across the ground, but narrowly favoured Melbourne. Neither side could kick a goal at first, both booting three behinds before Eric Glass kicked his first of five goals. Geelong took the lead, before two late goals to Smith put the Demons back in front.
The Demons should have won after leading by 38 points at the last change, but by kicking 0.5 and allowing the visiting Pivotonians to boot 7.6 they conceded the lead in 'time off'. They might not have been so loose in the last quarter had Allan La Fontaine and Jack Mueller not been in Adelaide with the Victorian team, but the players that were in the side did well enough over the first three quarters to expect they would run the game out.
Glass, Reiffel and Ogden were best. 19th man was Feltscheer, who came into the side when original 19th man Furniss replaced Lewis (leg injury) in the starting lineup.
