The VFL returned after a week off for interstate football, with Melbourne having gone into the break beating Carlton to get back into the four. They then travelled to Geelong to try and consolidate their position but the race for finals football took another twist when they were well beaten by one of the league's worst sides.

The game was played on a ground where the centre was a glue pot, and Geelong adapted far better to the difficult conditions. Four goals to six behinds in the first quarter set Geelong on their way. They were 19-0 up before Melbourne scored, but the visitors could only add behinds. The home team got the first goal of the second quarter as well. Despite another ten scoring shots in the second quarter - as part of a 15 minute period of dominance - the Reds only managed three goals. Harry Harker was the chief offender for his team by missing five shots on goal in the first quarter alone, hitting the post twice. The margin closed to three at the break when House kicked a point at the end of the second term.

Four goals in a row to Geelong during the third quarter settled the issue, and by three quarter time Melbourne were four goals behind again. They had won their last game with a rush in the final term, but a goalless last quarter condemned them to defeat.

In a poor standard game Geelong were clearly the better team, and especially considering they lost two players with injury during the game they were deserving of their victory with both faster and better use of the ball.

Corbett, Charlie and Lilley were best.

The loss dropped Melbourne back below Carlton on percentage and kept alive the finals hopes of Richmond and Geelong.
