Late goals in the second quarter gave Melbourne, who had been kept into the game until then by the strong play of their defenders, the lead. Immediately after the break, the Bulldogs made their move, kicking six goals to nil in the third term to build a match-winning lead. The result became crucial several weeks later when the Dogs pipped Melbourne for a finals berth.
Best were May, Viney and Lever.
