After two wins in a row Melbourne had rescued their early season form with looked to be deserting them when they lost to Hawthorn and Collingwood in consecutive weeks, but against a St Kilda side desperately trying to stay in the race for the five they were beaten by two five minute bursts.

Melbourne went into quarter time with a narrow lead before St Kilda kicked five goals in 11 minutes. Despite winning in the ruck and the centre of the ground the Demons had been held back by St Kilda's attack, and even though they recovered from the burst at the start of the second quarter they were not at their best. Another run of four goals in five minutes midway through the last quarter sealed the game in St Kilda's favour.

The Demons were unable to stop Stewart Loewe who took 16 marks, kicked four goals and dispatched of three opponents throughout the day. Even John Northey said that if Loewe was put into his side they would win the flag. Conversely Darren Bennett was only allowed one goal all day, in time-on during the last quarter.

Future Demon David Grant kicked five for the winners.

Best were G. Lovett, Stynes and Tingay.
