The faltering Demons - sitting 5-6 with their finals hopes hanging on by a thread - were given little choice of beating the premiership favourite Kangaroos. An unconvincing win against Collingwood in Round 11 wasn't fooling anyone, so it was a shock when three goals in the first six minutes of the last term gave them a 19 point lead.
Todd Viney (knee), Garry Lyon (back) and Marcus Seecamp (hamstring) had all been pre-match withdrawals and Corey McKernan dominated the centre against Jeff White. Still it took the brilliance of Wayne Carey, not 100% fit but still kicking 4.4, to win the day. During the day he became North's highest ever career goalkicker.
The Kangaroos trailed by six points entering time-on then kicked seven behinds in a row to win by a point.
Best were Leoncelli, Hopgood and Schwarz. Defeat left the Demons just one game out of the eight but fourth of five teams who were 5-7.
