Melbourne win by 42 points
Having lost seven in a row the Demons tackled an inexperienced St Kilda side just half a game behind them on the table. The Saints led narrowly at every change but it was an appalling game of football which showed just why the two sides were so far out of finals contention. Every mistake the Demons made their opponents seemed keen to repay with one of their own.
The margin at the last change was a goal before Melbourne finally clicked, demoralising the Saints with early goals in the final term and charging away to kick 9.3 to 2.2 and win comfortably. Brent Crosswell, who had spent most of the day in defence, went forward and booted four in the final term.
Despite the drought breaking victory the pain wasn't over for the players. The club's medical staff had decided that standing in near-freezing water in a bath for ten minutes after a game was more effective than merely applying ice packs. They couldn't have picked a worse day to unveil their grand new scheme, it was the coldest day of the year in Melbourne.
Best were Flower, Nettlefold and Fowler.
