Recently retired former Demon and Magpie Shane Woewodin was paraded around the ground before the match, and despite his acrimonious exit from Melbourne, the former Brownlow Medal winner's kids wore Melbourne jumpers. His son Taj Woewodin would later play senior football for Melbourne. In addition to Woewodin, 1956 premiership players Frank Adams, John Beckwith, Keith Carroll, Brian Dixon, Clyde Laidlaw, Ralph Lane and Stuart Spencer were also present, with Spencer providing an original 1956 penny for the coin toss.
David Neitz won the toss, and the use of the wind in the first quarter. Collingwood goalled directly from the opening bounce, but by quarter time Melbourne led by four goals to two. The last came just before the break, with Aaron Davey laying a tackle and goalling from 50 metres after the siren. From there, Melbourne's dominant midfield carried them to an impressive win. Less than a minute after the restart Davey set up David Neitz, then provided the assist for Matthew Bate to kick another. A minute later he kicked a goal of his own, and later in the quarter Davey provided Cameron Bruce with a goal.
Neale Daniher said "I think we are improving. How much better? We have to wait and see, but we are a better team than last year".
Brock McLean and Matthew Whelan were late withdrawals.
