2nd placed North started raging favourites against mid-table also rans Melbourne, even more so given that they'd come of a 111 point massacre of Carlton the week before. The Demons, on the other hand, had lost by ten goals to Hawthorn.

At half time, though, the form book had been thrown out the window as the Demons extended a 10 point quarter time lead to five goals at the long break. North had played a night game during the week and looked ired. Alan Johnson provided the highlight of the first half with a five bounce goal from the half-back line.

Garry Linnell in The Age said From the opening bounce, Melbourne attacked the ball with almost religious fervor, moving it forward quickly while many of North's stalwarts stood around flat-footed, looking tired

The Demons left the field to a standing ovation but it proved premature as the Roos piled on ten goals in the third quarter to get themselves back into the match. At the five minute mark Brian Wilson goalled and have five for the day. The 38 point margin was Melbourne's high water mark, as it was all North from then. Melbourne had six goals of their own but the momentum had shifted. Ross Glendinning went to full-forward in the 4th term and kicked three goals to help North over the line.

After the game Barassi got into a scuffle with a heckling fan in the dressing rooms before tongue lashing reporters who suggested his side failed under pressure.

Best were Johnson, Wilson and Giles. Peter Moore suffered a fractured jaw.
