A second consecutive 10 point loss cost Melbourne even more ground in the race for a top two finish, and for the second week it was their inability to have a firing forward other than Fred Fanning which cost them. He got their first goal, and three of his side's four for the term but the Demons were well short of other options.
Strong defence kept Essendon at bay during the second term, and Melbourne retained a five point lead at half time. Essendon took the a lead during the third quarter but the Demons got back in front, and a late goal from McMahen gave them an eight point gap.
The Demons had led at every change, and were in front until the ten minute mark of the last term before being overrun. They only managed one goal for the term, wheras Essendon kicked four goals in six minutes to take the lead and ultimately the four points which lifted them back into third alongside the Demons.
Best were Lock, McLean and Rodda. O'Connor replaced Smith (injured leg) in the third quarter and Bowman replaced Bickford in the third quarter.
