South had put themselves back in top four contention with a surprise win over the Saints a week earlier, and they almost caused the Demons' second slip up within three weeks.
On a heavy deck after pre-match rain the two sides shared 11 goals in the first quarter, and only 13 more were kicked over the next three quarters. In contrast to the previous week when it was Melbourne who kicked inaccurately, this time it was South - and unlike the Demons against Fitzroy it cost them dearly.
Given the conditions the two sides played a quality, fast paced match. South lost their chance of victory in the third quarter when they kicked 1.10 - including 10 behinds in a row. The scores were levelled in the last term, but Norm SMith kicked three goals in five minutes to win. South came back with two late goals but it was too late.
LaFontaine, Beames and Chandler were best.
