A big crowd turned up expecting a good quality game, but both neutrals and Melbourne fans alike would have been disappointed by the poor quality performance of the home team. After a much improved season following on from one win in 1906 it was a taste of what the team had been through that year.
In contrast to Collingwood's fast, systematic play the Melbourne team played as individuals and were beaten appropriately. More often than not they not only missed their teammates but found Collingwood players with their kicks. Even when they eventually did manage to get the ball forward their kicking for goal was terrible.
It was only in the last quarter when the game was well lost that Melbourne put up any fight, but even then they were heavily outscored and only managed a solitary behind.
Nolan was Melbourne's best, along with Conquest and Pearce.
Harry Cope was reported for striking after a complaint from Collingwood. Despite the field and boundary umpires stating they didn't see the incident he was suspended for six matches.
