An instant hit, Carr kicked a goal with his first kick in league football, and seven of his team's eight goals in his third game, but despite kicking 35 goals in his first season Carr only played six games in 1971.
During 1971 he attempted to win a clearance from the club so he could play in the VFA, but Melbourne retained him. That year he led the VFL Reserve grade goalkicking in with 75 goals and finished equal third in the Gardiner Medal for best player in the Reserves competition.
Carr had eleven goals from the first three games of 1972 before registering none in what would be his last game. Coach Ian Ridley publicly criticised him for playing from behind and not leading down the ground, and Carr won a clearance to Oakleigh in the VFA. He had also applied to join them in 1971 but was refused. He played in their premiership side and became the second player to score Brownlow Medal and JJ Liston Trophy votes in the same season.
Left Oakleigh at the end of 1973 and joined Oakleigh Districts, playing there through 1981 and winning the league goalkicking every year.
