Trained twice in the 1958 pre-season after kicking 101 goals in the amateurs before appearing at Hawthorn training the following week. He was residentially tied to the Hawks, and they requested that he didn't train again with the Demons.
He suggested that he'd apply for a clearance to Melbourne but didn't appear in a senior match for either side and returned to University Blues, where he remained into 1959.
