Recruited by the Demons in 1956, Cook was signed immediately after the conclusion of a practice match where he had dominated at centre half-forward. Early in the season he returned to play for Yallourn and was best on ground, earning him his first start with the VFL senior side a week later.

A utility player, Cook struggled to play regular games across three premiership seasons before being cleared to Warrnambool for 1959.

His real first name was David.
