Melbourne won the toss and had the advantage of kicking with a strong wind in the first half. They used the breeze perfectly, opening a 4-0 lead by the break. Bennie had the first goal within minutes of the start, and the Reds were never challenged again. The Imperials didn't swing into action until they conceded a second goal, but despite their improved play they still conceded two more goals.

With the use of the wind Imperial came on strong at the start of the second half, they scored two goals and had another one disallowed. After the call was ruled out the game became rough, and the gap was cut to 4-2 before Serjeant scored the final goal.

Best was Percy Serjeant, Nichols and F. Baker. Carr and Longden suffered injuries.
